A subject like erectile dysfunction is bound to be surrounded with as many myths as facts when it comes to causes and treatments.Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex.Having erection trouble from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern.

While ED is more common in older men, it is not a normal part of the aging process and should be viewed as a medical problem that requires a medical solution. Just as you would not leave high blood pressure untreated as you age, ED and its effects on the body should not be ignored.

If erectile dysfunction is an ongoing issue, it can cause stress, affect your self-confidence and contribute to relationship problems. Problems getting or keeping an erection also can be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treatment and a risk factor for heart disease down the road.

Erectile dysfunction can have a range of causes, both physical and psychological. Physical causes include:

  • Narrowing of the blood vessels going to the penis – commonly associated with high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol or diabetes
  • Hormonal problems (low testosterone levels )
  • Prostrate surgery or injury

Psychological causes of ED include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship problems

Risk Factors

  • Alcoholism & Substance abuse
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Stress and Depression
  • Spinal Cord/Nerve Damage
  • Some Medications
  • Ageing- Diabetes
  • Radiation Therapy

Sometimes erectile dysfunction only occurs in certain situations. For example, you may be able to get an erection during masturbation, or you may find that you sometimes wake up with an erection but you are unable to get an erection with your sexual partner.

If this is the case, it is likely the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction is psychological (stress related). If you are unable to get an erection under any circumstances, it is likely that the underlying cause is physical. Erectile dysfunction can also be a side-effect of using certain medicines.

ED is felt by both the man and his partner and can create feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem or lead to depression. Intimate relationships often suffer, especially if the situation is not addressed; the partner can feel unloved or feel it is somehow her fault, creating relationships problems. When self-esteem is impacted, it can cause difficulties in other relationships as well, with problems at work, with extended family and friends.

Erectile dysfunction symptoms include persistent:

  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Inability to have or to sustain an erection to complete satisfactory sexual activity
  • Reduced sexual desire

Just like any other disease, Erectile Dysfunction is in most cases curable. A family doctor is a good place to start when you have erectile problems.  You may be surprised at all the options for treating erectile dysfunction.  Some men can reverse erectile dysfunction with lifestyle changes. Even if medication is required, it’s likely to be more effective if you implement lifestyle changes such as

  • Exercising Regularly
  • Sticking to a healthy and balanced diet
  • Limiting the level of alcohol intake
  • Sticking to a sleeping routine
  • Herbal remedies
  • Monitoring your medication

Erectile Dysfunction is just like any other disease which can be controlled, maintained and cured If the required and necessary action is taken to avoid permanent impotence in the long run.
